Here is the day-by-day itinerary of the 8 Days Jewish Heritage Tour Morocco.
We adapt this itinerary to your flight arrival time.
Day 1: Casablanca → Rabat
Your driver meets you at Mohammed V Airport and briefs you on the tour. We start with a Casablanca city tour: the royal palace exterior and the interior of the Hassan II Mosque. We then visit the Jewish quarter and its synagogues (Bet-El, Em Habanim, Neve Shalom) and the Museum of Moroccan Judaism. In the afternoon we drive to Rabat to visit the Chellah, the Kasbah of the Oudayas and the Mellah, now home to a few Jewish families. We continue to Salé, birthplace of Rabbi Hayyim Ben Moses Attar, known for his Torah commentary Or ha-Hayyim. Dinner and overnight in a local riad in Rabat.
Day 2: Rabat → Chefchaouen
After breakfast, we drive north to Chefchaouen, the blue city set between two mountain peaks. Founded in 1471, it was settled largely by Andalusian exiles, both Muslim and Jewish, which explains its Andalusian-style old quarter of narrow, irregular streets, fountains and carved doors. Spend the afternoon exploring the old town and the Uta el-Hammam square. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 3: Chefchaouen → Meknes → Volubilis → Fes
We drive to Meknes, the imperial city of Moulay Ismail, with Bab El Mansour, Hedim Square and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. We then discover the city’s Jewish heritage: the old Mellah with its historic street names, the new Mellah and its synagogues, the Talmud Torah synagogue, the Jewish cemetery and the tomb of Rabbi David Benmidan. After lunch, we visit the Roman city of Volubilis before arriving in Fes. Dinner and overnight in a local riad.
Day 4: Fes
A full-day guided tour of Fes, one of the great centers of medieval Jewish life and home to the Talmudic scholar Rabbi Isaac Alfasi, and to Maimonides between 1160 and 1165. We visit the Mellah and its synagogue, then Al Quaraouiyine University, the oldest university in the world, the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Nejjarine fountain and the Moulay Idriss Mausoleum. We wander through the medina’s alleys, filled with merchants and craftsmen selling dates, spices, copper and musical instruments. Overnight with breakfast in a local riad.
Day 5: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou → Erfoud → Merzouga
We cross the Middle Atlas to Ifrane, nicknamed “Little Switzerland”, and stop at its stone Atlas lion statue. We continue through the Azrou cedar forest, where you can see the giant old cedar and feed Barbary macaques. Lunch in Midelt, then we follow the green Ziz Valley, with its adobe architecture, palm groves and distant kasbahs. Near Erfoud, the landscape opens onto the Merzouga dunes, where you are welcomed with mint tea. Ride your camel into the dunes to reach your camp and climb a high dune for sunset. Dinner by the campfire and overnight in a deluxe desert camp.
Day 6: Merzouga → Todra Gorge → Ouarzazate → Aït Benhaddou → Marrakech
Watch the sunrise over the desert, then after breakfast drive via Rissani and Tinghir to the Todra Gorge, among the highest and narrowest gorges in Morocco. Continue through the Dades Valley and its “monkey toes” rock formations to Kalaat M’Gouna, the “rose city”, where you can buy local rosewater. We pass Skoura and Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa”, with an optional stop at the film studios. We then cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Marrakech. Overnight in a local riad.
Day 7: Marrakech
After breakfast, a guided tour of Marrakech starting with the Koutoubia Mosque, then Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs. We visit the 16th-century Jewish quarter, the Slat al-Azama synagogue and the Jewish cemetery. After lunch, we explore Jemaa el-Fna Square and the colorful souks and craft stalls. Overnight with breakfast in a local riad.
