Merzouga desert and imperial cities of Morocco

This 15-day journey from Ouarzazate to Merzouga Desert offers one of the most complete and immersive experiences in Morocco, combining the raw beauty of the Sahara with the cultural richness of imperial cities, Atlantic coastal towns, and the High Atlas Mountains.

Designed for travelers seeking depth, diversity, and comfort, this extended itinerary goes beyond the desert to reveal Morocco’s historical soul, architectural heritage, and regional contrasts. From ancient caravan routes in the south to Roman ruins in the north, and from blue mountain towns to vibrant imperial capitals, every stage of the journey unveils a new layer of Moroccan identity.

The adventure begins in Ouarzazate and leads through legendary kasbah routes, palm-filled valleys, and the dramatic landscapes of Dades and Todra Gorges. You then enter the Sahara Desert at Merzouga, where camel trekking across Erg Chebbi dunes, sunset viewpoints, and a luxury desert camp experience create an unforgettable highlight.

The route continues north through the Middle Atlas, passing cedar forests and alpine towns before reaching Fes, Morocco’s spiritual and intellectual heart. From there, the journey expands toward Chefchaouen, Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, and finally Marrakech, before returning to Ouarzazate.

Depending on your arrival time, the afternoon may be dedicated to a gentle introduction to the city. Ouarzazate is known for its cinematic identity and traditional earthen architecture. You may visit the Taourirt Kasbah, a former residence of the Glaoui family, where labyrinth-like corridors, carved clay walls, and elevated terraces reveal the architectural heritage of the region.

The evening is free to relax and enjoy dinner at your accommodation or in a local restaurant, preparing for the adventure ahead.

Overnight in Ouarzazate.

Day 2: Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Skoura – Rose Valley – Dades Valley

After breakfast, the journey continues toward one of Morocco’s most iconic landmarks: the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. This UNESCO World Heritage Site rises dramatically from the earth in a fortified earthen architecture that has stood for centuries along ancient caravan routes. You will walk through its narrow alleys and climb to viewpoints overlooking the surrounding valley.

The route then leads through the Skoura Oasis, a peaceful region filled with palm groves and traditional kasbahs hidden among agricultural lands. The landscape gradually transforms as you continue toward the Rose Valley, where seasonal rose fields and local cooperatives produce natural perfumes and cosmetic products.

By afternoon, you arrive in the Dades Valley, a region famous for its dramatic rock formations, winding roads, and fortified villages. The scenery becomes increasingly rugged and cinematic, especially around the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formations.

Dinner and overnight stay in a charming hotel or riad in Dades Valley.

Day 3: Dades Valley – Todgha Gorge – Rissani – Merzouga

After breakfast, you depart the Dades Valley and travel toward Tinghir, a town surrounded by lush palm groves. From here, you reach the Todgha Gorge, one of Morocco’s most impressive natural wonders. Towering limestone cliffs rise on both sides of a narrow canyon carved by a river, creating a dramatic and peaceful atmosphere. You will have time to walk along the gorge and enjoy the fresh mountain air.

The journey continues across desert landscapes toward Rissani, an ancient caravan town that once served as a major trading hub in the Sahara region. Its traditional souk reflects authentic desert life, especially during market days when locals gather to trade goods and livestock.

By late afternoon, you arrive in Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi slowly emerge on the horizon. The atmosphere becomes quieter and more atmospheric as you approach the edge of the Sahara.

Overnight in a hotel or riad near the dunes.

Day 4: Merzouga Desert Exploration – Khamlia – Nomads

This day is dedicated to exploring the Merzouga desert region in depth. After breakfast, you begin a 4×4 excursion across the dunes and surrounding desert landscapes.

Your first stop is a visit to nomadic Berber families living in traditional tents. Here, you will be welcomed with mint tea and gain insight into their simple yet resilient way of life shaped by desert conditions.

Next, you visit the Meffis area, an abandoned mining site that reflects the region’s geological and industrial history. The landscape here contrasts sharply with the soft dunes of Erg Chebbi.

The journey continues to Khamlia village, home to the Gnawa community. You will experience a live musical performance featuring rhythmic percussion and spiritual chants rooted in African heritage.

After lunch in a local restaurant, you may explore a nearby oasis where traditional irrigation systems support small agricultural plots.

Return to your accommodation in Merzouga for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Camel Trek & Luxury Desert Camp

Early in the morning, you may choose to witness sunrise over the dunes, a peaceful moment where the desert slowly transforms under golden light.

After breakfast, prepare for a camel trekking experience across Erg Chebbi. Guided by experienced camel handlers, you will cross the dunes at a gentle pace, stopping for photos and enjoying the silence of the Sahara.

As sunset approaches, the dunes change color dramatically, creating one of the most memorable scenes of the journey. You will then arrive at your luxury desert camp.

At the camp, you are welcomed with traditional mint tea before settling into your private tent equipped with modern comforts. Dinner is served under the stars, followed by live Berber drumming and music around the campfire.

Overnight in a luxury desert camp in Erg Chebbi.

Day 6: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt

After sunrise and breakfast at the camp, you leave the desert and return by camel or 4×4 to Merzouga village. From here, the journey continues north through the Ziz Valley, one of Morocco’s most beautiful palm-filled corridors.

The road follows the Ziz River, passing fortified villages and lush oases surrounded by arid mountains. Scenic stops allow you to appreciate the contrast between desert and greenery.

You continue toward Midelt, a quiet town located between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. The atmosphere here is cooler and more mountainous compared to the desert.

Dinner and overnight stay in Midelt.

Day 7: Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes

After breakfast, you cross the Middle Atlas Mountains. The landscape becomes forested and green, offering a complete contrast to the desert environment.
