Duration

5 Days

Destination

Valleys & desert trails

This 5-day hiking experience explores Morocco’s most iconic trekking environments, combining the High Atlas Mountains, remote Berber villages, and the edge of the Sahara Desert.

The itinerary is designed for travelers who want a balanced hiking adventure: not extreme mountaineering, not tourist bus hopping, but real walking routes through landscapes shaped by mountains, rivers, and desert winds.

You will hike through terraced valleys, climb moderate mountain passes, cross cedar forests, and gradually transition toward the Sahara dunes of Merzouga. Each day blends physical activity with cultural encounters, including visits to Berber households, traditional markets, and oasis settlements.

Guided by local mountain experts, the trek follows established footpaths used by villagers and mule caravans, ensuring both safety and authenticity.

  • Guided hikes in the High Atlas Mountains
  • Exploration of traditional Berber villages
  • Scenic walks through valleys, rivers, and terraced fields
  • Crossing mountain passes with panoramic viewpoints
  • Cedar forest trekking with wildlife observation
  • Visit to Sahara desert landscapes in Merzouga
  • Camel walking experience at sunset over Erg Chebbi dunes
  • Overnight stays in mountain lodges and desert camp
  • Cultural immersion with local families and markets
  • Combination of mountain and desert trekking in one itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil – First Atlas Hike

Your journey begins with a transfer from Marrakech to Imlil, a mountain village located at the foothills of the High Atlas.

After meeting your local guide and mule team, you begin a gentle hike through walnut groves, terraced farms, and small Berber settlements. The trails are well-established and follow traditional paths used for daily transport between villages.

This first day focuses on acclimatization and immersion, allowing you to experience the rhythm of rural mountain life while surrounded by dramatic scenery.

Overnight in a mountain guesthouse in Imlil.

Day 2: Imlil – Mountain Pass – Azzaden Valley Trek

After breakfast, the hike becomes more demanding as you ascend toward a mountain pass overlooking multiple valleys.

The climb offers continuous panoramic views of the High Atlas peaks and surrounding Berber villages. At the top, the landscape opens into vast mountain ranges before descending into the Azzaden Valley.

This valley is known for its lush vegetation, walnut trees, and traditional stone houses built into the slopes. The contrast between rocky terrain and fertile land defines the beauty of this region.

Overnight in a local lodge in the valley.

Day 3: Atlas Mountains – Transfer to Todra Gorge – Canyon Walk

Today, you leave the High Atlas and travel toward southern Morocco.

The landscape gradually shifts from green mountains to arid plateaus before reaching the spectacular Todra Gorge. Here, towering limestone cliffs form a narrow canyon carved by centuries of water erosion.

You enjoy a walking excursion along the riverbed, surrounded by vertical rock walls that create one of the most impressive natural hiking environments in Morocco.

Overnight in a hotel near Todra Gorge.

Day 4: Todra Gorge – Ziz Valley – Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, the journey continues toward the Sahara Desert.

You pass through the Ziz Valley, a long oasis lined with palm trees and traditional villages. This region represents the transition between mountains and desert, offering wide panoramic views ideal for photography stops.

By afternoon, you arrive in Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise dramatically from the desert floor.

A short walk or camel ride introduces you to the dunes before settling into your desert camp.

Dinner and overnight in a Sahara camp under the stars.

Day 5: Sahara Experience – Return Journey

Wake early to witness sunrise over the dunes, when the sand shifts from deep orange to soft gold tones.

After breakfast, you leave the desert and begin the return journey toward Marrakech (or another destination depending on your itinerary). The route passes through desert towns and changing landscapes, marking the end of your hiking adventure.
